John Curtin Weekends 2008

John Curtin Month is an annual event organize by CV! (Curtin Volunteers!) to do charity work such as blood donation, used items donation campaign and John Curtin Weekends.

John Curtin Weekends is the major event of John Curtin Month which people visit to rural area and do charity work. This year, i went to a long house in Lambir.

Day 1- 3/10/08

The day of going to long house trip, that morning i slept at 5.15 and woke up at 6.00am. then arrived at drop-off point at 6.30a.m with unwillingness. Why? Because i wish to go back to Brunei instead of going to Long house. That morning there were only 9 out of 20 members went. So 9 of us sat in a big long-distance bus. While in the bus we got our green JCW t-shirt and bag. Less than 2 hours we reached our destination which is Lambir. There are 3 long houses in Lambir and ours were the 3rd houses which is called Tuai Rumah Samin, a long house which is located near a jail. As we only have few member so we grab 2 members from other houses.

Once we entred the house,we were asked to drink tuak and the people there 'ngajat' (Iban traditional dance) to welcome us from the entrance till the half end of the house {is called half end becoz it is still building}

After the ngajat, we all took pictures together while waiting for the guys to take bags from the bus.(spot me? im wearing the feather hat.hehehe.one of the indai put on my head)

After that, we have our tea time. Hehehe~~a chicken biscuit. Cute >.<

Then, we select our own foster family. Me and Jun were chosen as the foster children on house no.2. Aunt Margaret, our Indai(mum in iban) asked us to help up in the kitchen. The dishes that we were told to prepare it Bamboo Chicken

Bamboo chicken(ayam pansuh) is an Iban dish called manok pansoh. The chicken is mixed with salt, ajinomoto and a vergetable which is called Bungkang together with ginger.

After we finish putting all the chicken with 10-15cm spaces left, water was poured into it and it was cover by ubi kayu. Why? i also dunno~~

After we finished with out bamboo chicken, we went out and help them to crunch ubi kayu with salt. It was tiring but i had so much fun (my hands)

After everything, it was the time to enjoy the meal that we cooked ourselves, yummy!!

This is when the other group came to visit our long house. Kasian Kah Wai~~we forced him drank 4 cups of Tuak!haha~~

That day, we also washed dishes and water the plants then walked around the kampung. My waist pained that day, because we bend down and washed dishes in the toilet then when i water the plant, i bend my waist also. Painful! That night, me and Jun slept at 8pm ++ because we were too tired.

Day 2- 4/10/08

2nd day, Me and Jun were woke up by our indai, aunt Margaret. she was surprise to see that Michelle was sleeping between me and Jun. Michelle slept with us the night before because her partner went to other places to sleep and she didnt want to sleep alone.

After we finished everything( brush teeth, mandi....), we were told to help up in the kitchen again. We were frying fried banana. hehehe~~

Jun! cooking fried rice...haha~~she was just looking only, what she did is add egg, salt, ajinomoto and oil..

So...after we had our breakfast, the next thing to do is to go to the farm to pluck vegetable. As u can see.. i wore cap and actually wearing a hand protection thingy. This is to avoid me getting darker. haha~~the basket is useless, becoz we didnt even use it.

After that, we helped to crunch the vegetable again. It was fun, hehehe but i think those indai will think that" this ppl ah~~dunno how to do work, come here kakacaucau!"

Surprisingly, we saw a little girl was tearing the sayur. Indai said many small children like to tear the sayur especially sayur mali.

After that sayur thingy, we had out lunch. Then we went to take a nap. Hahaha..then we were woke up by indai with a "gong" scary oh! Then we walked to the other 2 long houses nearby. The journey took us 30 minutes. very hot oh!!

So we arrived at Leslie's group long house. The group of people went out. Where did they go? they went to celebrate hari raya with YB. Fun oh!? they even went to shopping.So.. we went to Kah wai's group long house which is just beside Leslie's group long house. Kah wai welcome us with this look...i actually had a thought that he looked like pervart..hahaha. So after we enjoy our tea time, ngajat there and drink tuak we walked back to our long house.

While on our way backed, we noticed pink pink thingy stick on the "longkao" so we all stopped and asked "apa tu" then indai said is the egg of an insect that looks like snail. so this is it. eadible lagi..

So after we went back, we took shower then me and Jun got nothing to do..so we took romantic picture of 2 of us. See how sweet we are?haha

Then the suffer part came, indai asked me..wat is my waist measurement. I told her 25-27cm. So she was so excited and started to asked me dress on this and that.. we even forced to wear singlet..hai~~so this is me..with traditional baju. So, after we all finished preparing.. we ngajat around the tree...the round round thingy is coins. Indonesia coins..
Group pictures..it looked nice but actually we girls were suffering, because my head was heavy, so we all were not comfortable and we were sweating.
The things that i was wearing were expensive.
The head accesories cost around rm200
The hand accesories cost aroud rm 100
the sarong thingy cost rm 300

Taking picture with indai(emak angkat) of me and ah jun!

our apai (bapa angkat)

all the pretty gals wearing traditional clothes. As u can see the 2 people infront didnt wear the hat thingy. this is becoz they were lacked of the hat thingy and ah jun couldnt wear it. her hair is too short. she will look nice if she wear it.hehehe

Day 3- 5/10/08

The last day of stayed in long house. That day, we were told to wear our green JCW uniform.

Taking pictures with all the kids and indai~~will miss them!

WAO~~~ALL GREEN GREEN. hehe~~it looked nice with all people wearing the same colour. This was during the time when leslie's group came an visit. we all welcomed them and ngajat together to the end of the long house.

Around 2pm, our bus arrived.. this was the picture we took in the bus with all the group 3 people.

Tisha's comment

This was not the 1st time of me visited long house but the experienced was different. The previous long house we didnt have signal for handphone, there was no ASTRO in the house, no water and electricity supply and most of the cars were hilux(because they need to drive a rocky road to their palm oil farm). This time, our longhouse had Astro, water and electricity supply, they even have LCD plasma tv, N95 handpone, but most of their cars were saloon car because they work in town area. Different longhouses have different culture, there is no harm in joining the JCW every year because we can learn more things from them. Overall the long house trip was fun eventhough we had few members in our group. However the pictures that we took were more then the other groups. hahaha~~
